Art: Alex Danvers & Maggie Sawyer from Supergirl (femslash)

Hey all, I drew two awesome ladies from Supergirl today and thought I'd share. I haven't waxed poetic about Supergirl here before - but the show should be right up this comm's alley: loads and loads of awesome female characters: heroes, villains, best friends, sisters, daughters, yes and a lovely lesbian couple: Alex & Maggie.

Title: Alex&Maggie
Rating: G
Medium: pencil
Note: drawn from a screenshot from the series 2 finale (no spoilers though)

I really love especially how Alex is handled in the show - she's the title heroine's sister and their relationship always is the most important for Supergirl - even when love interests (later on) turn up. spoilers for Supergirl season 2 )

Discussion: Wonder Woman movie

Is anyone interested in a discussion of this film? I'm guessing by now a lot of people have seen it and so far I get the impression the general reviews have been positive. What do you think? I believe she definitely qualifies as an awesome woman. :-)

Disclaimer: My only knowlegde of the character stems from DC's animated series, I haven't ever read a WW comic but I'm told by more knowledgeable fans the animated series got her essence right.

Some points to talk about:

- portrayal of Amazons
- representation of different kinds of women in general
- Diana as a role model
- fun factor :-)
- portrayal of Steve Trevor and his interactions with Diana

This is actually inspired by a fic, but it works on its own as well.

Summary: The fic that inspired this points out that abundant water is a new thing for Rey once she's with the rebels. Apparently she gets fascinated by washing machines and uses them for meditation.

Sgt. Alice Shephard, on the original "Equalizer," played by Chad Redding

I got the chance a few days ago to enjoy an episode of EQ, and Shadowplay was next up on my rewatch-Control-episodes list. I didn't remember it very well; he's not in it much. I had forgotten how awesome Sgt. Alice Shephard is in it.

(Season 3, episode 8, aired 11/11/1997, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0572581/ for the imdb page).

Shadowplay is an Oliver North type episode. Andrew Banks has the Ollie North role. He's testifying in a hearing and stonewalling and lying all the way. Turns out Sgt. Shephard is also Banks' friend. She notices when his police protection is pulled, and raises heck about it, both onscreen and off. She defends herself and him when the bullets start flying, though there is a bit of damsel-in-distress. She stays cool under fire, and tries to get him to reconsider, as do a few others. They seem to lean towards a relationship, but she never loses her head over him, and by the end, she's not heartbroken. She's realistic, and unfortunately, he fulfills her expectations.

She's not a stereotype.

Shadowplay isn't Shephard's only appearance, but it's the one I remember seeing her the most. I'll probably add to this when I watch her other appearances. Ms. Redding also worked as a major guest star on the show as a reporter, in the episode "Pretenders." She was great there as well, but I like her as Alice the most.

Probably showing my age , but thinking this morning about the two secretaries on the original Hawaii Five-O, May and Jenny. They were awesome, though I connect more with May than with Jenny. Imagine having to ride herd on all those men, especially Steve McGarrett.

Much of the time, secretaries and administrators, etc. are forgotten or just stock characters. One of my few arguments with Battle Creek is the Milt-hungry coroner. in the last episode, one of the detectives was trying out an idea on her, and all she really cared about was seeing Milt. Not a good representation, in my opinion. When you actually stop and think about them, the secretaries, etc. are just as important as the active characters - can't have one without the other.

Maidens e06

This episode on Maidens:

~ Shelly and Roie explore the Hidden Lake, and uncover a startling discovery
~ Neri attempts to interview Uzi, but he’s let Karnit bribe him with pastries into letting her come, and…
- ...Karnit is only more convinced Maya was just a disturbed kid
+ Ruthie is still awesome, in case anyone wondered
~ What’s up with Yinon and Liezer, anyway?
+ Noam makes some distressing statements, and Grandpa Uzi is very concerned...
~ Shelly and Roie’s discovery rattled someone’s cage, but in a good or a bad way?

Other notes.
~ Ramon Prison, which Shelly and Roie visit in this episode, is situated near Mitzpe Ramon. That puts it some 150km/2hr from Eilat.
~ Something which would be implicit to Israeli viewers but not necessarily obvious to outsiders it the situation of the Sawaed family. As a (Bedouin) Arab, Amir Sawaed volunteered for enlistment - he had no duty of draft. Bedouins do that to make a living, and in hopes of improving their community's standing to the wider (Jewish) Israeli society. The second consideration... doesn't work out: the Bedouins may well be the most marginalized group in Israel. Moreover, the Sawaed family would've been open to violence from their community due to Amir's choice to enlist. This makes Amir's apparent abandonment by the military all the more bitter. The story presented in this episode? National headlines.

Content advisory.
~ A snake (nothing happens to anybody)
~ Karnit and the school counselor are horrible; adult women dismissing teenaged girls (and teenagers in general)
~ Self-inflicted violence (sharp blade, not life threatening) in the last scene (at Ramon Prison)

B'tulot e05

This week on Maidens:

+ Neither Uzi nor his daughters have any fucks to give about societal expectations; Neri, Karnit and Roie are all quite exasperated with that.
+ Ruthie continues to be the absolute best
+ Roie continues to aid and abet Shelly
+ The Complicatedness of Elinor, Maya and Shelly takes front-and-center.

Other notes.
~ Amir Sawaed's story is based off the documentary Dolphin Boy
+ Maya's involvement with Amir was... the sort of a thing that would've opened either of them to significant violence. Most mixed relationships get through without such violence, but it's always on the table. Neutral-to-positive depiction of that relationship is... not obvious
+ It contributes to what seems to be characterization of Uzi and his daughters as Leftist. Portraying an entire Mizrachi family as Leftist flies in the face of every last stereotype. Letting a family from an Arab-speaking background people (Rejwan is an Iraqi name, and Uzi and Ruthie are shown speaking Arabic between them) in fiction keep this background and be positive about and proud of it is a relatively new phenomenon and a Big Damn Deal (it's politically loaded like whoa). Having this family be anti-racist because of their cultural Arab-ness is radical politics. (Bonus points: Sasson Gabai, who portrayed Uzi, is an Iraqi Jew and was born in Baghdad.)
~ Amir's sister has a name, given in the credits; her name is Raniyah.

Content advisory.
~ Preparing a body for burial (female nudity, soft focus, respectfully done)
~ Roie and Shelly’s vocab
~ Drug use (weed) and sexual behavior (kissing, groping) between a married couple and another man in a domestic setting; seems to be established
~ Discussion of past hard drug use of 15yr old teens
~ Sexism and ablism: one man character (Yinon) consistently uses “crazy” and similar words to dismiss the opinions of several women, his wife included

B'tulot e04

This week on Maidens:

~ Complicated face-off including Shelly, Hefetz, Oggy, several guns and a camel
~ Just because Neri is actually trying to protect Shelly doesn’t mean he’s going to let her get away with shit
~ We find out what Roie is really doing in Eilat
+ La’tai finds Phillipus an appropriate translator (the translator and La'tai's best friend: both women)
+ And Shelly might have some siren in her after all...

Content advisory.
~ Resolution of the situation with Oggy, compliant with the show's line of "The easy suspect is rarely the right supect". Oggy very much presented as an adult, complex person who is loved by his family the way he is, but this sequence (nearly 15min long) may still be difficult to negotiate.
~ The show continues to deal directly and honestly with the vulnerability of refugees, and their extortion by both traffickers or police. (Characters who are refugees are very much presented as their own persons with their own agendas and identities other than "refugee".) Mentions of trafficking and the torture camps in Sinai.
~ There’s an unmistakable sex scene; no genitalia shown (primary or secondary), equal amounts of male and female skin, and some really unmistakable body language and facial expressions. Also kink, under cut because spoilery. )

Streaming: here.

Has anyone ever read/seen the Women in Refrigerators meme/trope done right?

Morning :)

I'm sure everyone/s familiar with the Women in Refrigerators idea, where a woman is tortured/harmed/threatened etc. to further a man's story. Has anyone read/seen a story where she is harmed because of him, he does rescue her, and yet it ends up propelling them both along? She gets revenge as well as he does, for example.

I went to a Hobbit marathon yesterday, saw Battle of the Armies for the first time. While I would have liked to see the younger actresses take a more aggressive part , there were at least three actresses who did, two of them main characters.

For some reason, this started me thinking about part of a story I wrote years ago that is WiR themed - she is tortured and dumped, and so he goes after her torturers. I do want to use this eventually; he very rarely shows emotion and he does in these scenes. Yet I know better now than to fall too far into a WiR scenario. But I'm iffy on how. Plotting is not my strong point. .

If I can get some ideas from reading, I'd have something for my brain to mull over until I'm prepared to dig up that story.

I may have to combine it with other bits and pieces, but I have enough on my plate that I've planned to be written first.

Thanks
Theresa
